Wellsprings Preservation

Protecting wellsprings in more than 10 States

The Wellsprings Conservation Program began in 2010 in the municipality of Chopinzinho, Southwestern Paraná, and was replicated in several regions where ENGIE Brasil has a presence. Its purpose is to protect watersheds and guarantee the supply of quality water to local communities’ current and future generations. The project is enabled through partnerships between ENGIE, social entities and local communities.

The Program is in line with the United Nations Organization’s (UNO) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – more specifically, with SDG 6 – Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.

Objectives

  • To ensure sustained water quality and quantity in the areas covered by ENGIE Brasil-operated plants;
  • To create a culture of water resources preservation in the areas where ENGIE Brasil operates, based on building the population’s awareness and its involvement in preservation actions;
  • To engage the community in the areas covered by the plants with environmental conservation actions;
  • To contribute to reducing exodus from rural areas;
  • To contribute to the social re-integration of inmates, creating skills-building opportunities and fostering environmental awareness.

Results

  • Protection of wellsprings in different parts of Brazil, ensuring water in greater quantity and of a higher quality for sustainable development;
  • Reforestation of the areas surrounding wellsprings with saplings of tree species native to each region;
  • Community outreach for water resources conservation actions;
  • Effective contribution to the scope of SDG 6 – Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.
